Waiting period as provided for in the Annual Holidays Act has been amended

The amendment to the waiting period as provided for in the Finnish Annual Holidays Act entered into force on 1 October. According to Section 25 of the new Annual Holidays Act, the employee is entitled to have his/her annual holiday postponed as of the first day of illness.

If at the beginning of or during the holiday the employee is incapacitated because of illness, accident or childbirth, he/she is entitled to postpone the annual holiday, should the holiday coincide with the incapacity period. More…

European Insolvency Regulation is being reformed

European Council Regulation (EC) No 1346/2000 on insolvency proceedings has been applicable to insolvency proceedings in the territory of the Member States of the European Union as of 31 May 2002. The Insolvency Regulation established the European framework for cross-border insolvency proceedings and is applicable if the debtor has assets or creditors in more than one Member State. After a little over ten years of application, the European Commission has carried out a needs assessment and submitted a proposal to amend the Regulation (COM 2012/744). The proposed amendments address the practical problems in the application of the Regulation. The Commission proposal is currently before the Council of the European Union. More…

New Directive on Consumer Rights

The Directive on Consumer Rights (2011/83/EU) will be effective in the EU Member States as of 13 June 2014 through national implementation. The Directive aims at facilitating cross-border distance selling by establishing uniform consumer protection rules in the European Union. Consumers within the EU will benefit from increased cost transparency, a 14 days right of withdrawal as well as the obligation of the seller to provide more comprehensive information to the consumer.
