Ropiequet has published an article in the Non-Prime Times entitled “What’s in Store on Fair Lending from the CFPB?” The article discusses the reported interest of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection in certain auto finance practices where auto dealers mark up the rate of the finance charge in order to share in the finance profit with the auto finance companies who purchase retail installment contracts from them.

The Conference was founded in 1927 and promotes the sound development of consumer finance law through publishing a Quarterly Report for the past 66 years, which covers issues and developments in consumer finance law, and by sponsoring educational programs in conjunction with the American Bar Association and others. John has been a member of its Governing Committee since 2003.

Naveja have published an article entitled “Fair Lending Developments: Testing the Limits of Statistical Evidence” in the American Bar Association Business Law Section’s law review, The Business Lawyer. The article covers federal enforcement efforts and private class actions, which assert claims in the fair lending arena during the past year under the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act as part of the Annual Survey on Consumer Finance Law. Mr. Ropiequet is co-editor of the Annual Survey, which covers all significant developments in consumer finance law on a national basis, and also co-authored the Introduction to the Survey.

Arnstein & Lehr Chicago Partner John L. Ropiequet delivered two presentations to the 2012 Housing and Auto Finance Workshop on May 8 in Baltimore, Maryland. The first presentation, titled “Hot Topics in Fair Lending: Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Dukes, Government Enforcement Actions and Other Landmines,” discussed the impact of the Supreme Court’s landmark class action ruling last summer on fair lending class actions. The second presentation, “Navigating Ethical Quandaries in the Social Media Age: How Do The Rules Impact a Lawyer’s Favorite Social Media Activities?”, explored how the Rules of Professional Conduct may limit what lawyers can do with the opportunities presented to them by social media and other internet-based forms of communication.

Ropiequet and Chicago Associate Katelyn Letizia have published an article entitled “Current Issues Under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act in ATM Litigation” in the Consumer Finance Law Quarterly Report.  The article outlines recent class action litigation against owners of automated teller machines who have run afoul of the EFTA’s fee notice posting requirements or other EFTA requirements for ATMs, and the available defenses to such cases.  This includes discussion of a class action case where the firm won a dismissal of the case for the ATM owner through an offer of judgment.

Mr. Ropiequet’s first article, discusses the Section’s partnership with Junior Achievement in which Business Law Section members are encouraged to volunteer with their local Junior Achievement chapters to provide financial literacy education in schools in their own communities. The second article reviews the Consumer Financial Services Committee’s website for consumers, Safeborrowing.com, which provides vital financial literacy information for consumers about a number of types of credit products.

TARK GRUNTE SUTKIENE assisted EQT Infrastructure Fund, part of a leading private equity group in Northern Europe, in the purchase of shares in Fortum Termest AS’s parent company Fortum Alpha B.V. As a result of the transaction, EQT Infrastructure Fund also acquired a 100 per cent indirect holding in Fortum Termest AS. The total value of the transaction was about EUR 200 million.

Fortum Termest AS provides district heating services in several regions in Estonia, offers tailored energy solutions to industrial and service sector clients, and supplies both companies and individuals with natural gas.
