What has been ordered – On Tuesday, March 10th, 2020, the government presented far-reaching restrictive measures to deal with the coronavirus for the next few weeks. Among other things, all outdoor events with over 500 participants and indoor events with over 100 participants are prohibited until the beginning of April (03.04.2020). However, what the government has not said is what that means for everyone. January 30, NYC: 2018 Technology Economic & Financial Outlook

On January 30, in New York City, our colleague Michelle Capezza of Epstein Becker Green will be a panelist at the “2018 Technology Economic & Financial Outlook,” hosted by the New Jersey Tech Council (NJTC).

From the “internet of things,” to the cloud, to autonomous cars, there is not a single industry segment that has not leveraged technology to develop better products and services for the benefit of their customers as well as their stakeholders.  As technology makes the world smaller, it also opens up endless opportunities for creativity and innovation. The panel will discuss the impact that technology will have in 2018 on the regional, domestic, and global economic and financial environment.

Davis Malm Participates in American Heart Association’s 10th Annual Lawyers Have Heart 5K

On May 31st, Davis Malm participated in the 10th Anniversary Lawyers Have Heart 5k Road Race and Summer Celebration to benefit the American Heart Association. Out of 101 participating Boston firms, Davis Malm had the 9th highest fundraising total at the time of the race. This was Davis Malm’s seventh consecutive year participating in the race.

Davis Malm shareholder Patrick T. Clendenen and associate Daniel T. Janis, former and current Executive Leadership Committee members respectively, were part of the Davis Malm team. The team was comprised of attorneys, staff, friends, and clients, and had 22 people participate in the race.

Robert J. Munnelly, Jr. Moderates Panel at 24th Annual New England Energy Conference & Exposition

On May 10, 2017, Davis Malm shareholder Robert J. Munnelly, Jr., moderated a panel at the 24th Annual New England Energy Conference & Exposition. Mr. Munnelly led a discussion on “The Maturing Retail Market,” which considered the current and future state of the retail electricity market, as well as examined up-and-coming retail products, services, and technologies. Panelists included Marc Hanks, Direct Energy and New England Chair for The Retail Energy Supply Association; Holly Benz, CLEAResult; Chris Hendrix, Wal-Mart; and Anthony Kosior, Yale University. The session was designed to educate industry professionals on the increasing accessibility of innovative retail supply offerings and renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

Immigration checks and Right to Rent

Recent changes have been announced to the Immigration Act 2016 (which came into effect from 1 December 2016), which have “upgraded” the failure to meet Right to Rent requirements to a criminal offence including a jail term of up to five years.

Right to Rent was a scheme introduced across England on 1 February 2016. The scheme requires landlords or their letting agents to make adequate immigration checks before letting a property. If they do not, they can be liable for a fine of up to £3,000.

Leading Anti-Corruption Advocates to Meet at Summit in Amsterdam

The International Monetary Fund has estimated that bribery costs the global economy an annual 1.5 to 2 Trillion USD. In the European Union, the economic costs associated with corruption total one percent of its GDP, a figure that nearly equals its annual budget. In developing and developed countries alike, corruption remains a grave social problem, with a negative effect on economic growth and the delivery of government services.

With the goal of combating corruption, Duxes has organized and will host the Anti-Corruption Compliance Europe Summit 2017, on April 26-27 in Amsterdam. The summit will gather more than 150 delegates, representing leading companies, government agencies, and non-profit institutions. During the two-day event, speakers and panelists will discuss important topics at the forefront of anti-corruption compliance, including enforcement trends, relevant legislation, industry-specific corruption, and models for compliance programs, among other issues.

On April 5, Robert J. Munnelly, Jr. and Patrick T. Clendenen, shareholders at Davis Malm, will present the program, “Protecting Data & Dealing with Breaches Globally in 2017,” as a seminar for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE).

The program will provide a comprehensive overview of data security developments affecting Massachusetts businesses and institutions in 2017, including global issues, recent litigation precedents affecting exposure to class action lawsuits for significant breaches, and emerging insurance coverage issues. The panel will also provide a timely update on recent enforcement trends and the evolving roles of the Consumer Protection Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office as reviewers of business practices and protectors of consumer rights relative to sensitive data.
