EVGENIA I. GORYSHINA PARTICIPATES IN ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION AT BOSTON COLLEGE LAW SCHOOL

On March 19, Davis Malm attorney Evgenia I. Goryshina participated in a mentoring program hosted by the Boston College Women’s Law Center. Ms. Goryshina and other successful female attorneys discussed various legal career paths available to female law students and provided insights from their diverse experiences and career choices. This round table format allowed the students to interact with and address the attorneys in a smaller group setting. Ms. Goryshina shared her experiences practicing law at a private practice firm and discussed her various practice areas.

DAVIS MALM TO HOST JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT SKILLS TO ACHIEVE PROGRAM

On March 14, Davis Malm will host a Junior Achievement of Northern New England Skills to Achieve program. The one-day program, tailored for high school students from local Boston schools, promotes lessons on financial literacy, workforce readiness, and skills needed to succeed in specific industries. Twenty-five students from South Boston’s Excel High School will take part in four interactive lessons taught by Davis Malm teams. The 45-minute lessons will cover tips for interviewing, techniques for problem solving and critical thinking, credit awareness, and resume and personal brand building. CHRISTOPHER J. MARINO JUDGES NATIONAL APPELLATE ADVOCACY COMPETITION

On March 6, Davis Malm attorney Christopher J. Marino served as a judge for the 2013-2014 Boston Regional National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC). The event, hosted by the American Bar Association Law Student Division, emphasized the development of oral advocacy skills through a realistic appellate advocacy experience. Students participated in a hypothetical appeal to the United States Supreme Court, which included writing a brief and arguing the case before a mock court. This year’s competition focused on labor law, and competitors examined the difference between “use” and “access” under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and whether a law student intern qualifies as an “employee” under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Medical Marijuana is Here: What it Means to Massachusetts Employers

By the summer of 2014, the smell of marijuana wafting in the breeze will confront Massachusetts employers with a host of new issues. On January 31, 2014, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health gave preliminary approval to the first 20 medical marijuana dispensaries in 10 Massachusetts counties. Medical marijuana is coming soon to a town near you.

Massachusetts employers will face many questions regarding medical marijuana implementation. Will an employee holding a medical marijuana registration card be allowed to use marijuana at work? Will an applicant or employee who tests positive for marijuana be subject to refusal to hire, discipline or termination? These and other issues will certainly find their way into legal proceedings before too long. More…

DAVIS MALM ATTORNEYS WALK TO THE HILL FOR CIVIL LEGAL AID

On January 30, nearly half of Davis Malm’s attorneys joined over 500 attorneys in the 15th annual Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid. At the Walk, lawyers lobbied state legislators to increase funding for organizations that provide advice and representation to low-income residents facing critical civil legal issues. This year, lawyers were seeking $17 million in funding for civil legal aid in the fiscal year 2015 Massachusetts state budget.

PAUL L. FELDMAN PARTICIPATEs IN MCLE ZONING PRACTICE SEMINAR

On February 11, Davis Malm attorney Paul L. Feldman presented at the “Zoning Practice: MCLE BasicsPlus” seminar. This seminar is designed for the practitioner who needs a solid understanding of zoning, including the basics for both residential and commercial properties, handling issues that arise when special permits or variances are required, dealing with nonconforming uses and structures, and dealing with the Land Court and municipalities. Mr. Feldman was part of a faculty comprised of experienced real estate experts.
