SAM MAWN-MAHLAU MODERATES PANEL AT TIECOM EAST ANNUAL CONFERENCE

On May 3, 2013, Davis Malm attorney Sam A. Mawn-Mahlau served as a moderator at the 15th annual TiECON East Conference organized by TiE Boston and sponsored by Davis Malm & D’Agostine, P.C. The panel titled “Personalized Medicine” was chaired by Mr. Mawn-Mahlau and focused on recent advances in technology allowing the identification of specific disease related elements in a patient’s genome. The panel discussed how to develop, finance and commercialize technologies which tailor patient treatments, and some of the barriers faced by the early participants in this potentially transformative area. The two-day annual conference brought together established and startup entrepreneurs from several sectors such as technology, life sciences, education, and clean tech.

DAVIS MALM HOSTS ABA WOMEN RAINMAKERS WORKSHOP

On April 25, Davis Malm was pleased to host the American Bar Association Women Rainmakers workshop “Niche Marketing: Why, How To, and Now What?” The two-hour interactive program was held in 38 cities, and tailored for women lawyers at all levels. The Boston workshop was led by Susan Letterman White, Chair of ABA Women Rainmakers. Group discussions focused on why niche marketing works, how to better focus business development efforts, and what steps to take to get more results.

Administration Proposals Affecting Benefits and Employment

INTRODUCTION

The Administration filed 256 pages of revenue proposals last week and our phones have been ringing. Is the government going to take my retirement account? Tamsin R. Kaplan Serves as Faculty Member at MBA CLE Program on Employment & Business Litigation Matters

On February 19, Davis Malm shareholder Tamsin R. Kaplan participated in the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Continuing Legal Education program, “Lifecycle of a Business: Part III Employment & Business Litigation Matters.” As part of the Business Law Section Council’s four-part educational series on establishing, operating and concluding Massachusetts business entities, this program focused on common legal problems relating to employment and commercial litigation. Experienced business lawyers as well as new practitioners attended the program. Ms. Kaplan discussed topics such as preventing and handling employment problems, drafting employee handbooks, wage claims and independent contractor issues, wrongful termination and discrimination claims, negotiation of severance agreements, and traps for the unwary employer in offer letters, contracts and workplace management.

DAVIS MALM ATTORNEYS WALK TO THE HILL FOR CIVIL LEGAL AID

On January 30, Davis Malm shareholder and Chair of the Massachusetts Equal Justice Coalition Samuel B. (Sandy) Moskowitz led over one third of Davis Malm’s attorneys and over 650 attorneys in the 14th annual Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid. At the Walk, lawyers lobby state legislators to increase funding for programs that provide civil legal aid to low-income Massachusetts residents. This year, the lawyers were seeking $3.5 million in increased funding to offset the severe drop in revenue from Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA), the largest non-state funding source for legal aid in Massachusetts, and to prevent further erosion of legal services for the poor.

On January 28, Davis Malm & D’Agostine, P.C. and attorney George A. “Tony” Hewett were pleased to host a program “Celebrating Success,” which featured Jeanne A. Hulit, Associate Administrator, Office of Capital Access for the Small Business Administration; Deb Ansourlian, Executive Director of Girls Incorporated of Lynn; and a special performance by singer/songwriter, Berklee College of Music student Samantha Schultz.

Ms. Ansourlian opened the program with a discussion of Girls Incorporated of Lynn, a nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The organization offers enrichment programs that teach essential life skills and promote healthy life choices to disadvantaged, low-income girls ages 6 to 18. These programs focus on academic support, personal development, career exploration and life planning, physical well-being, and leadership and community action.
