Chicago Partner Edward Snyder and Associate Robert A. McKenzie’s article “Surprises in Illinois Tax Amnesty Program” appeared in the May 2 issue of General Aviation News. The article addresses how the Illinois Use Tax Amnesty program covers only aircraft purchased from out-of-state retailers, i.e., those subject to tax under the Use Tax Act, not the Aircraft Use Tax Law, and it covers only individual owners, not businesses.

J. William Braithwaite
Hoffman Estates Attorney J. William Braithwaite will be one of two presenters at a seminar for newly elected officials of the seven municipalities of the Barrington Area Council of Governments on May 31. The seminar is designed to educate those elected to Village offices for the first time in the April, 2011, election on a number of municipal topics ranging from the Open Meetings Act, the complexities of the Freedom of Information statute, parliamentary procedure and municipal land use. The seminar will also cover the fine art of parliamentary procedure and when closed sessions may be held in compliance with the law. Mr. Braithwaite will also discuss practical aspects of local government for new officials, including dealing with the press, civility and conflicts of interest. He has conducted similar training seminars a number of times during his more than 50 year tenure as a Barrington area municipal attorney.

Arnstein & Lehr Chicago Partner Jerold Siegan is highlighted in the May issue of Chicago Lawyer magazine which this month includes a feature story on Chicago area lawyers with “interesting hobbies, talents and creativity.” Mr. Siegan is included on the cover while standing in front of three of his paintings at our Chicago office with two other artists/performers. Additional photos of Jerry and his art work are included inside the issue. Mr. Siegan is an award-winning painter specializing in abstract expressionism, or what he prefers to call “complex minimalism.” Many of his paintings are displayed in our Chicago office.

Chicago Partner Mark Spognardi was recently interviewed for an article that was posted April 29 to the Web site of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The article addressed the concern that employers may be lulled into a false sense of informality when conducting video interviews that might lead to inappropriate questions. SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management, representing more than 250,000 members in more than 140 countries.

Chicago Partner Kathleen Lach was a presenter at an Illinois State Bar Association conference, “Illinois Tax Overview and Current Issues: The Expert’s Perspective,” on April 29. Ms. Lach’s presentation, “Informal Conference Board Proceedings,” reviewed the practice and procedural requirements when appearing before the Informal Conference Board and discussed how to effectively represent a client in the informal review process.

Joel Rothman, a partner in our West Palm Beach office, recently co-chaired and spoke on developments in Copyright Law at the 2nd Annual Florida Intellectual Property Symposium in Fort Lauderdale. Mr. Rothman chairs the Intellectual Property Committee of the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar, the sponsor of the event. Mr. Rothman gave the “2011 Copyright Law Update” to attendees at the Symposium.
