News regarding Covid-19 regulations

The state of emergency related to the spread of Covid-19 in Latvia has been extended until 11 January 2021, strengthening the previously established restrictions.

General

  • Protective face masks shall be worn indoors, including in workplaces. Employees who have separate offices (are alone in the room) are allowed to not wear protective face masks.
  • Merchants or building owners shall ensure that persons who do not wear the protective face masks at all or wear them incorrectly are not allowed indoors and services are not provided to such persons.
  • Additional restrictions on gatherings have been set, starting from 3 December the “2 + 2” principle shall be observed – a distance of two meters shall be observed and meetings shall be limited to two people.
  • On weekends and public holidays, only pharmacies (including veterinary pharmacies) and convenience stores – grocery stores, stores for hygiene products and petrol stations, will be open. During the state of emergency, stores will not be allowed to sell alcohol on weekends.
Employment
  • Idle time benefit and other benefits may be received by anyone, regardless of industry.
  • Idle time benefit will be available to companies, self-employed persons and patent fee payers whose decrease in turnover in the aid period has been at least 20% (instead of the previous 50%) compared to the average turnover in August, September, and October 2020.
  • It has been specified that if an employee is employed by several employers or in different forms of employment, idle time benefit is granted in accordance with the order of submission of applications, but not more than EUR 1000 for all employers or in different forms of employment together. On the other hand, if it is established that the idle time benefit for an employee employed by several employers or in different forms of employment is less than EUR 330 (in each case), the minimum amount of idle time benefit of EUR 330 is applicable only in one case, according to the order of submission of applications.
