The Supreme Judicial Court soon will consider the question of whether the state’s legalization of medical marijuana in 2012 carries with it employment protections for a patient’s use of the drug outside the workplace. The plaintiff in Barbuto v. Advantage Sales & Marketing, LLC, et al. uses marijuana to treat a gastrointestinal disease.

I am a couple of days late with this, due to travel, but nonetheless, happy 8th blogiversary to Zen & the Art of Legal Networking! It’s a bit hard to believe that 8 years ago I wrote my first post (Is the Billable Hour on its Way Out? – spoiler alert, it’s still dragging on), and the last eight years have been quite the roller coaster ride, teaching me an endless number of things about networking, writing, discipline, social media, and so much more.
March 1, 2017 — The Esplanade at Place-des-Arts was the venue of a lunchtime gathering to support Soupe pour Elles, an initiative led by Gaz Métro. Today’s gathering was part of the annual fundraising drive with a target of $200,000 before March 8, to help nine organizations providing assistance to women in difficulty, homeless of victims of violence.
The decision by a federal jury in Dallas, Texas, to award $500 million to the plaintiffs in a case involving virtual reality (VR) technology – despite the jury’s conclusion that the defendants had not misappropriated any of the plaintiffs’ trade secrets – illustrates the degree to which companies must move with caution when they begin or expand businesses relying on VR or other emerging technologies.
The plaintiffs in the case, Zenimax Media Inc. and id Software LLC, sued Oculus VR LLC, owned by Facebook, Inc., which had acquired Oculus in October 2014 for approximately $3 billion. The plaintiffs also sued Oculus’ founder (Palmer Luckey), chief technology officer (John Carmack, who previously worked for Zenimax), and former chief executive officer (Brendan Iribe) individually.
