Arnstein & Lehr Fort Lauderdale Partner Richard L. Rosenbaum was quoted in a March 26 article in USA Today, which was posted on Tampa Bay’s News 10. The article, titled “Shooter in Florida teen’s death fears for his life,” discusses shooter, George Zimmerman, who remains in hiding after he shot and killed an unarmed black teen, Trayvon Martin, which he says was an act of self-defense. Richard comments that Zimmerman is likely facing financial and emotional stress due to the media attention surrounding the case.

Arnstein & Lehr Chicago Partner Robert E. McKenzie was quoted in a March 23 article in, a leading provider of online business news for the tax and accounting community. The article titled “Tax Resolution Firms Made Promises They Couldn’t Keep” discusses recent tax resolution services that have gone bankrupt. Mr. McKenzie comments that the three service companies – TaxMasters, Roni Deutch and JK Harris – that filed for bankruptcy recently were engaged in heavy duty advertising on a national scale.

Social Media is Here to Stay – An LMA 2012 Re-cap Part I

You may have guessed that I have a certain fondness for social media. I’ve touted its benefits here before, so it should come as no surprise that I headed straight for the social media session while I was at the LMA Annual Conference in Dallas a couple of weeks ago.

Before I get into the nitty gritty of the presentation from the panelists and my thoughts, I’ll share what the CMO of Nixon Peabody said during the session – “The most significant thing a marketing department can do in 2012 is to develop a social media strategy.”

Arnstein & Lehr relocates Coral Gables attorneys and staff to Miami office

Arnstein & Lehr LLP relocated its Coral Gables attorneys and administrative staff to its Miami office at 200 S. Biscayne Blvd., Suite 3600, in Miami. effective April 2, 2012.

The relocation is part of a strategic plan by the firm to streamline its Miami operations, while creating better synergy among the firm’s attorneys.  The move provides clients with greater ease of access to Arnstein & Lehr’s wide breadth of practice areas including tax, banking and financial services, immigration, litigation, securities and intellectual property.

In total, four attorneys, all specializing in real estate transactions, have relocated to the Miami office.  The group includes partners David Shear and Kenneth R. Dreyfuss and associates Yael Doron and Amanda Shear.  In addition, seven administrative personnel relocated as well.

On March 16 TARK GRUNTE SUTKIENE managing partner, attorney at law Ivars Grunte, was re-elected to the supervisory board of “SOS Children’s village association”.

The events during the past few months have resulted in various arbitrations knocking at the doors of the Government of India (“GoI”) in terms of the Bilateral Investment Treaties (“BITs”) executed by GoI with various countries around the world. In most of these arbitrations, one is likely to see the GoI defending claims for damages arising from its failure to protect investments in India of the investors from other contracting countries as well as its failure to resolve issues related to erosion of investments.

Experts and businesses around the globe feel that, irrespective of the outcome, arbitration under BITs is an experience any country doesn’t need, as it implies wide publicity of disputes with the very investors such country would be attempting to attract.

In February, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued new place of service coding guidance, which we previously addressed in the client alert “Healthcare Alert for Pathology and Laboratory Providers .” On March 29, 2012, CMS announced that the effective date of the place of service guidance will be delayed until October 2012.

Data Privacy and Network Security Alert: Massive Data Breach at Credit Card Processing Company

Visa, MasterCard and Discover have notified their issuing banks of a recent security breach at the seventh largest credit card processing company, which could affect up to 10 million cardholders. The breach occurred at Global Payments, Inc., an Atlanta-based company that assists the major credit card companies in processing transactions for merchants. Initial reports indicate that the breach occurred between January 21, 2012 and February 25, 2012, and the intrusion may be connected to Dominican street gangs in and around New York City. When news of the breach broke, Global Payments’ stock plunged as much as 14 percent and trading was halted on its stock. Global Payments has said that credit card data may have been stolen, but that cardholder names, addresses and social security numbers were not obtained. Both Visa and MasterCard have indicated that their own systems had not been compromised.
