AWR- What are they good for…?

The Agency Workers Directive will be implemented in the UK on 1 October 2011 through the Agency Workers Regulations 2010 (“AWR”).
The AWR were brought in to provide temporary agency workers with equal treatment in terms of basic working and employment conditions. The AWR aim to put agency workers on an equal footing with those employed directly to do the same job by the hirer.

Mankind’s dependence on energy and information is ever growing. Just as elsewhere in the world, energy carriers, energy transport and data communication have become common topics of discussion in Estonia over the last few years. The state, energy and telecommunications companies are planning their strategies and investments – a new nuclear power station, new oil shale technologies, an LNG terminal, new electricity and gas pipelines, a comprehensive fibre-optic data communication network and 4G mobile network, to name just a few. Companies should be more aware of those issues, for supply security and price are key factors in the planning and management of any business. This year’s Big Issue conference will look at the main concerns of businesses related to energy and information as well as at today’s and tomorrow’s solutions to current problems.

Vilius Bernatonis co-opted on to the Committee of the European Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

Vilius Bernatonis, partner at TARK GRUNTE SUTKIENE, was co-opted on to the Committee of the European Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in a committee meeting in Paris on April 9, 2011.

Along with congratulations, Mr. Stuart Ness, head of European branch of CIArb, expressed his gratitude to Mr. Bernatonis for the active support given to the arbitration community in the Baltic Region, the last case being the seminar in international commercial arbitration, organised in Vilnius this March.

This formal acknowledgement also underlines the successful lodgement of commercial arbitration as a method of regulation of business conflicts in the Baltics.

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is one of the world’s leading centres of excellence for the development of arbitration, mediation and other forms of dispute resolution at all levels. The Institute was founded in 1915 and now has over 12,000 members in more than 100 countries and it is a not-for-profit charity, which works in the public interest through its international network of more than 30 Branches and Chapters.

Some Advice to New Marketers on Attending Conferences

As I attended my sixth LMA Conference last week, it occurred to me that I couldn’t believe how fast my time in the legal profession has gone! But it also occurred to me that there may be many people out there attending their first conference, or just starting out in the legal or professional services fields, who never got any lessons in college about how to act in a business environment.
