On November 17, Davis Malm attorneys Laurie Alexander-Krom and David M. Cogliano conducted an employment law seminar, “Fundamentals of Employment Law,” sponsored by Sterling Education Services, Inc. The seminar provided valuable information on current emerging issues, such as hiring and terminating employees in the current economy, as well as critical issues concerning the FLSA and state wage and hour laws, employee privacy in the workplace, and an update on recent changes in developments with the ADA and FMLA.
Ms. Alexander-Krom and Mr. Cogliano addressed hiring issues such as credit and criminal background checks and discussed the use of social networking sites in the employment context and employer risks when using social networking sites for employment decisions; best practices for handling terminations and layoffs; how complex wage and hour issues are treated under the FLSA versus the state wage and hour laws; classification of employees; deductions from wages and when they are permissible; and paying wages properly upon employment separation.
